Lyndon Baines Johnson
Early Life
Some people believe that President Johnson was an average president, but I on the other hand believe he was more than that. He was born near Stonewall, Texas on August 27, 1908. Then he moved to Johnson City, Texas, a town named after his grandfather. Lyndon Johnson went to college at Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He studied politics.
Family Information
Johnson had a small family. His parents were Sam Ealy Johnson and Rebekah Baines. President Johnson married Claudia Taylor, who was known as " Lady Bird". They had two daughters named children named Luci and Lynda.
Jobs
Before Johnson entered politics, he worked as a grape picker and a law clerk. When he entered politics he was a National Youth Administrator, in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate Majority Leader, Vice President and President.
His Presidency
Johnson became president in an unusual way. He was sworn in on a plane. Johnson actually became president when John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. After Kennedy's assassination Johnson became president. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald with a sniper rifle bullet in his head and neck. For the first two years Johnson did not have a vice president. When he was elected president in 1964, his vice president was Hubert H. Humphrey. Another thing we should know was Johnson won with 434 more votes than his opponent Goldwater`s 52 electoral votes. Also he was the 36th president and served for the six years. He belonged to the Democratic Party.
Important Contributions
While he was president, he ended the Vietnam War and did not want to run for president again because the United States wanted to keep fighting and fighting. He grew tired of too much war. One of his quotes that I liked was " We have suffered a loss that cannot be weighed. For me, it is a deep personal tragedy. I know that the world shares the sorrow that Mrs. Kennedy and her family bear. I will do my best. That is all I can do. I ask you your help - and God`s". (he said that on Nov 22,1963) .
Other Thing We Should Know
After his presidency, he retired to his Texas ranch. On January 22,1973 he had a heart attack and died. After he died his library opened at the University of Texas in Austin. Before he was president he was in World War II. In conclusion that is why I disagree with his critics.
